Renewable UK guidelines set out a recommended approach when undertaking medical fitness for work assessments for near offshore and land based wind energy projects.
The scope and content of the guidelines have been written by the electricity industry’s Occupational Physicians Advisors Group in association with Renewable UK’s Occupational Health Group and endorsed by Renewable UK’s Health & Safety Strategy Group.
It recommends:
• A health assessment to detect and assess any medical conditions that may compromise safety by creating a risk of falling or sudden incapacity requiring rescue; and
• A medical fitness assessment to assure capability for regular climbing of vertical
ladders and for working in hot and/or confined spaces.
The guidelines do not set out any specific protocol for dealing with individuals who may have “failed” the medical assessment, this will need to be agreed and clearly set out between the occupational health department and the individual concerned. This could for example include undertaking a suitable programme of cardiovascular exercises or other suitable intervention.
